Adhan - Call for prayer

Napoli, 2017

Sound installation

Site-specific installation for Casa Tolentino, requalification project of the seventeenth-century monastery of St. Nicholas of Tolentino at the foot of the hill of San Martino. In its historic garden, 5 times a day speakers emit the adhan, call for the muslim prayer - sung by a woman. From a orthodox point of view this choice is highly controversial. The initially radical interpretation of the adhan changes its meaning when inserted into an European context, in which arabic language is strongly stigmatized and associated with terrorism and religious fundamentalism.

The installation was made possible thanks to Samar Sami, an egyptian singer based in Cairo.
